Artist Statement
In a nod to the still-life painters of the Dutch Golden Age, North Carolina-based artist Andrew Leventis considers the historical and contemporary significance of vanitas, a motif in which objects represent the fleeting nature of life and the passage of time. His still-life paintings trace the histories of humans exhibiting possession, ownership, and intimacy with one another through things, such as necklaces, photos souvenirs, and other still-life memorabilia.
In his film stills series, the artist makes paintings from a number of technicolor-era film productions. Obsolescent rotary telephones, heirloom vanities, vintage tea sets, black and white family photos, and corduroy coach bags denote a transient world in which things pass in and out of usage and fashion. These objects are set amidst hotel corridors, turquoise swimming pools, pink bathtub tiles, and city sidewalks. Much like early still life, they represent a backdrop of shifting worldly things. At times, figures move in and out of these surroundings, like travelers in a landscape. Leventis’ process appropriates source material from film, television, and other mass media outlets. He observes disregarded moments in film, presses pause, records the frozen image through his camera, and uses the resultant photograph to create his oil paintings. His work combines the human touch of painting with the clinical look of the camera, as viewers are simultaneously aware of the look of photography, the look of video, or the look of low-quality computer screen imagery and, all the while, that the object presented is a painting.
In his refrigerator series, created in 2020, Leventis is inspired by photographs of fridge contents taken by his friends and colleagues. The core themes of vanitas paintings – the fragility and transience of life and the hollowness of worldly pleasures – are present. Traditional symbols of the genre like skulls, extinguished candles, books, and musical instruments are replaced by sets of whole chickens, a pig head, a slab of butter, or everyday treats, such as a carton of heavy cream, a jar of pickles, or beer bottles. Similarly, decadent piles of objects existing purely for our own entertainment and satisfaction reflect our futile desire for hedonistic consumption in contemporary society and a primal need for self-preservation. Leventis began to work on this series during the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced him to grapple with the caducity of life. His oeuvre casts a spotlight on our human shortcomings and fears, but does so with compassion and understanding, for others as well as himself.
